My Reviews of 10 Best Wi-Fi Routers for Multiple Devices in 2021

1. NETGEAR Nighthawk XR700 Pro Gaming WiFi Router

NETGEAR Nighthawk XR700

The NETGEAR Nighthawk XR700 is a Pro Gaming Wi-Fi router that’s perfect for gamers. It has a Gaming Dashboard to monitor bandwidth usage and identify devices that cause lag spikes so you can minimize that.

It can also prioritize gaming devices by allocating bandwidth to each device and eliminate lag. You can even control the maximum download speeds per device.

The Geo-Filter lets you filter other players to assured local connection and eliminate lagging. However, many customers claim that these features are simply too good to be true.

A common issue seems to be the router randomly rebooting and having an unstable connection. This could be a problem if you’re in the middle of a game. Customer service from the company is also not the best.

Pros

  • Gaming Dashboard
  • Prioritize gaming devices
  • Geo-Filter for less gaming lag

Cons

  • Random reboots
  • Unstable connection
  • Poor customer service

2. TP-Link Archer C5400X Tri Band Gaming Router

TP-Link AC5400

The NETGEAR ArcherC5400X is also a unique model made for gamers, with a 1.8 GHz 64 bit Quad-core CPU and a fast 1G RAM that accelerates loading.

The RangeBoost and beamforming features can strengthen reception while sending Wi-Fi to only targeted devices. It comes with advanced security too and a free lifetime subscription to TP-Link HomeCare forinclusice antivirus, parental controls and QoS.

Unfortunately enabling the WPA security seems to slow down the speed significantly, which can be a huge problem. This router also works as an access point but can’t support too many devices.

Pros

  • Made for gamers
  • RangeBoost and beamforming
  • Impeccable security features

Cons

  • Enabling WPA2-AES security slows down speed
  • Significant speed drop when multiple devices connect

3. NETGEAR Nighthawk X10 Quad-Stream WiFi Router

NETGEAR Nighthawk X10 Quad-Stream WiFi Router

The NETGEAR Nighthawk XR10 has one of the fastest Wi-Fi performances in the industry. With coverage of up to 2500 sq ft and AD7200 speed, including a tri-band of 800 + 1733 + 4600 Mbps for 60 GHz band devices.

It also has MU-MIMO, to deliver faster connection to all your devices for faster streaming and downloads. Moreover, the smart parental control lets you use the Nighthawk app to control internet access and filter websites for your kids.

The downside is the router’s unstable performance that could randomly drop every few hours. This is quite a common problem and can happen for both 2.4G and 5.0G frequencies.

It was eventually fixed, but took over a year for firmware updates to overcome this problem. NetGear’s customer service is also known as one of the worse and unsatisfactory.

Pros

  • One of the faster routers
  • MU-MIMO feature
  • Smart parental control

Cons

  • Slow firmware updates
  • Poor customer service

4. NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S Smart WiFi Router

NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S

Next up, the NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S can support up to 4000Mbps speed for heavy-duty streaming, including 4K videos and multi-player online games.

It also can automatically switch between three bands to provide stable and seamless Wi-Fi for 55 devices. Additionally, the NETGEAR Armor provides an advanced protection against cyber threats.

You don’t have to buy anti-virus subscriptions anymore as the router will fit your devices with anti-virus, anti-malware, as well as data theft protection.

Again, NetGear is notorious for their poor customer service, especially for those whose devices are over 90 days old. You might need to pay a lot for simple “troubleshooting” and identification of your router issues.

Some firmware updates are also known to cause connection problems instead of upgrading the router.

Pros

  • Heavy-duty streaming
  • Up to 55 devices
  • NETGEAR Advanced Security

Cons

  • Terrible customer service
  • Faulty firmware upgrade

ASUS RT-AC86U Wireless Router

The ASUS RT-AC86U is one of the best Wi-Fi router for multiple devices as it uses NitroQAM technology for 5GHz quad-stream (4×4) speeds and a total of 2917Mbps.

This is great for streaming 4K live events or an intense gaming competition. It also has AiProtection feature that will protect all connected devices even without anti-virus.

While the ASUS router app makes setup, managing usage and parental controls convenient.

One major drawback of ASUS routers is their poor warranty replacement. Many have claimed that trying to get a replacement router is a nightmare and almost impossible.  This is definitely something you would want to pay attention to before buying it.

Pros

  • Fast NitroQAM technology
  • AiProtection and parental control
  • ASUS router app

Cons

  • Poor warranty replacement

6. NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S WiFi Router

NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S

The NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S has excellent coverage of 2,500 sq ft, along with beamforming antennas and dual band for reliable Wi-Fi. It’s easy to set up with its Nighthawk App that will provide quick installation instructions.

This router comes with Gigabit Ports for fast wired connections to your computer and other devices. It also has two USB and 1 eSATA ports to connect storage drives or printers across your network.

Unfortunately, like the other NetGear routers, this one also has random disconnecting issues. It can be especially annoying for long-running connections and certain software.

It also claims to have a premium “90 day phone support”, which many have claimed to be nothing but a marketing gimmick. The phone support staffs aren’t usually helpful or accommodating.

Pros

  • Ultimate 2,500 sg ft coverage
  • Recommended for up to 45 devices
  • Four 1G wired connections

Cons

  • Random disconnecting issues
  • Bogus “90 day phone support”

7. Linksys MR8300 Mesh WiFi Router

Linksys MR8300

The Linksys MR8300 features a Tri-Band and MU-MIMO technology for high-speed Wi-Fi to multiple devices. It has multiple ethernet pots for easy connectivity like shared storage and printers.

This includes four superfast Gigabit Ethernet ports. The Linksys app also provides easy setup, control and can automatically update the router firmware.

However, you can only set up the router using the App, which might actually be inconvenient for some people. You can also only configure the router through the smartphone app, but not directly on its SSID interface.

Pros

  • Tri-Band and MU-MIMO
  • Bandwidth for 20+ devices
  • Multiple ethernet ports
  • Automatic firmware updates

Cons

  • Set up only through App
  • No web interface

8. D-Link DIR-882-US WiFi Router

D-Link DIR-882-US wifi router

The D-Link DIR-882-US boasts a smooth performance thanks to its dual band Wi-Fi and dual-core processor. Together, they deliver fast and seamless Wi-Fi connections even when there are many additional networks around.

There is also the Advanced Smart Beam which can track your devices and enhance Wi-Fi speed throughout your home.

This D-Link model is an excellent router for a small home or office space, but might not be as good for larger ones. Although marketed as a mesh router, setting up a mesh network is quite difficult. Users claim that this function doesn’t actually work.

Pros

  • Dual band
  • Dual core processor
  • Advanced Smart Beam

Cons

  • Mesh router doesn’t work

9. TP-Link Archer C2300 WiFi Router

TP-Link Archer C2300

The TP-Link Archer C2300 can provide far-reaching Wi-Fi with its RangeBoost and beamforming technology to amplify and focus signal.

Meanwhile, the Airtime Fairness feature can ensure efficient signal distribution. It will divide attention between older and newer devices to improve overall performance. It also offers a personal VPN server without having to pay for subscriptions.

Unfortunately, Tp-Link is known to also have poor customer service. Although the product claims to give warranty, it’s not very reliable. Remember that a lot of customers have complained about this if you decided to get this router.

Pros

  • RangeBoost and Beamforming
  • Airtime Fairness
  • Personal VPN

Cons

  • Poor support service
  • Unreliable warranty

10. TP-Link Archer A9 Wireless Router

TP-Link Archer A9

Lastly is the TP-Link Archer A9. It’s an extra secure router that includes parental control, guest Wi-Fi, access control, WPA3 security and a VPN Server too.

The Smart Connect technology will automatically direct you to better bands while Airtime Fairness can optimize the Wi-Fi signal and connection for lag-free streaming.

Moreover, it comes with a TP-Link app so you can easily set up and manage the Wi-Fi network from anywhere.

Unfortunately, the firmware has much vulnerability that hasn’t been fixed for years. It can be an inconvenient wait for newer and better updates.

Pros

  • Extra secure
  • Smart Connect and Airtime Fairness
  • TP-Link tether app

Cons

  • Vulnerable firmware

How to Choose a Wi-Fi Router for Multiple Devices

Choosing a wifi router for multiple devices

Here are some important factors you should consider when choosing a Wi-Fi router for multiple devices.

1. Latest Wi-Fi Standard

For the best performance, look for routers that support the latest wireless standard of 802.11ac. It should be able to support a Gigabit speed that’s faster than the traditional 600Mbps limit.

But note that you can only enjoy this full benefit if your device also uses the latest standard.

2. Wi-Fi Speed

The top speed standard is 802.11, although this rarely occurs in real life conditions when walls and other objects pose as obstacles.

Don’t worry, most routers today can support HD video and media streaming relatively quickly.

3. Wi-Fi Bands

The most common bands are 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, where routers that can use both are called dual band. Make sure to use the best band for optimum performance.

Sometimes, routers also have two separate radios so they can provide two wireless networks.

4. Secure Wi-Fi Connections

A good Wi-Fi router will have at least WPA2 protocol to ensure your safety and privacy when connecting to the internet. The best ones, moreover, will have added security features.

This includes extra encryption, monitoring and blocking feature, and even the ability to see what people are browsing.

5. MU-MIMO

Some of the best Wi-Fi routers for multiple devices have the MU-MIMO facility, especially newer models. These routers can deliver data at a higher speed.

It is a particularly useful advantage when there are multiple devices connected and trying to run video streaming at the same time.

6. Access Point Mode

If your router can act as an access point, it can be very useful if you want to cover a large area. It should come with manual and easy instructions to follow and set this up.

You can even set the same ID and password so the entire system will look like a single network.

7. Beamforming

Some newer routers have a beamforming feature that can improve both the strength and speed of signal. It helps the router to focus its signal towards certain devices instead of the whole area. This means you can enjoy better connection.

8. Router Interfaces

Check the wired interface of your router and its connectivity requirements. USB ports only come with routers for cheap networked storage. Meanwhile, the best routers will have an Ethernet connection of up to 1Gbps or 1,000Mbps.

9. Router Antennas

You should also consider the antennas. Protruding ones may look uglier, but can radiate stronger signals than the sleek-looking internal antennas. Look for a balance between an elegant look and great coverage.

10. Price

Plan and stick to a budget when purchasing a Wi-Fi router. Don’t overspend just because of brand name, but also avoid buying the cheapest router you can find. Remember that quality matters in the long run!

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the best Wi-Fi router for multiple devices can support the latest Wi-Fi standard while having a fast speed. It should also have secure connections and multi-functionality.

Don’t forget to consider its other facilities and capabilities, especially how they compare with the price. Happy shopping!
